Luna Magic is a relatively new fixture on Gallery Walk, though it shouldn’t be an unfamiliar one to those who frequent the boutiques that cater to products for the spirit. Owner Heather Palmer explains her takes on the classics and shares what makes the mountain so appealing to her.

How did you get started here?
I opened in August. I was made redundant from my job, and I thought ‘you know what? I’m going to open a shop and sell essential oils because I love them!’ So, I went out on a whim and did it.
You sell essential oils as well as a variety of other products. How would you describe your range in your own words?
Different, I think. I source local, and either I make, or I have other people make me things. My daughter makes all the candles and wax melts, I have teachers who make all the earrings and scarves. A friend of mine has a clothing label, and another friend makes all the painted wine glasses… I try to stock things that are different and handmade, rather than just being like every other shop.
Many of your products fall under the general umbrella of spirituality. Luna Magic isn’t the only shop in the area with a focus on that: do you think there’s a reason that Tamborine Mountain can be such a hub for things like that?
I honestly don’t know. I don’t live up here, but I’ve always wanted a shop up here. I think it’s just a place that’s different, a place where everyone can be themselves and there’s no judgement. I think people are drawn to the mountain. I certainly am.
What’s your best-selling item?
My oil roller ball bottles. They are really popular. There’s an oil for everything and an oil that fixes everything. We have all different types. Uplifting ones, grounding ones, oils for headaches, itches, acne, vertigo… you name it, we’ve got it.
What’s an average days’ workload for you look like?
Depends! Some days I’m really busy with lots of customers in and out and making all my oil blends. Other days it’s just cruisy and I can’t really do much but talk to the people who come in. Every day is different, you never know what you’re going to get.
Do you think there are any particular trends in your clientele?
No, I think I get quite a diverse range of people. All types— More women than men, but there’s no particular group. Everyone wants to come down and have a look.
What’s your opinion on the Tamborine Mountain area?
I want to sell my house and move here. My opinion on the area is that I think it’s very laid back, very grounding, very back to nature. It’s very different up here. I love it. I look forward to coming to work up here after a coffee from Wild Plum.
What do you think Luna Magic really provides to the area?
Something different. I really do think even just having my repeat customers, the people who come in for a chat, come in because they need an oil for this or a crystal for that… I think I provide a service, even if it is just having a chat.
What do you enjoy most about doing this?
Creating. I love creating. Making things, trying new things, and talking to people. I love it. I especially love when it’s really busy, the vibes are really going and there’s people everywhere, I love that.
